Woody out of Leeds clash

The Yorkshire club demanded the clause in the deal in a bid to stop unrest at what is sure to be a highly charged fixture, and in the circumstances Freddy Shepherd had little choice but to agree.

Leeds club secretary explained the deal to the BBC: "Obviously it's quite political if Jonathan came back to Elland Road so soon after leaving.

"We just agreed that we didn't want that to happen. The player's not fit anyway so I don't think it's an issue.

"It's something Leeds United wanted so the chairman asked me to put it in the agreement. Newcastle were quite happy to go along with it."

So Woody will have to wait until March 1 and the visit of Chelsea to St James’ Park for his debut.
