Will Clark Return For Burnley Game?

Newcastle United central defender Ciaran Clark has been told by manager Rafa Benitez that he must follow the example of club captain Jamaal Lascelles and improve if he wants to regain his place in the Magpies starting line-up.

Florian Lejeune returned to fitness following an ankle injury suffered on the opening day of the season against Tottenham Hotspur and Benitez restored his summer signing to the Newcastle starting XI.

Speaking to the media ahead of the trip to Burnley on Monday night, the St James’ Park manager made it clear that he picks his team on form.

“Because Lejeune and Clark were playing well during the pre-season, Lascelles had to improve – and he did that,” the Newcastle boss told the Shields Gazette.

“Jamaal’s now doing really well, so Lejeune and Clark are competing.

“They have to be ready, they have to compete. If you want to play for a top side in the Premier League, you have to be prepared to compete (for your place).”

Benitez’s pragmatism reduces the situation to its basic level. The Newcastle boss has told Lascelles, Clark, Lejeune and his fourth centre-back Chancel Mbemba, that four players into two positions is not a permanent problem.

Injuries, suspensions and loss of form will play all play a part in the season, meaning the quartet are almost certain to feature.

Mbemba is currently filling in at full-back as the Magpies struggle with Massimo Haidara and Paul Dummett’s continued absence.

For Monday’s trip to Burnley, it looks likely that Clark is set to retain his place on the Newcastle bench.
