Gini Wijnaldum has hit back at those who feel his poor away form was a big factor in Newcastle United’s relegation from the Premier League last season.

The Dutchman’s disappointing displays on the road have followed him to Liverpool.

Wijnaldum is still to net an away goal after 32 attempts in the Premier League for the Reds and United.

Although, he has scored 15 goals in 31 top flight games in home matches.

When asked about his away form for both clubs, Wijnaldum, who United sold to Liverpool for £25million last summer after he told Rafa Benitez he wanted to quit the club after just one year, said: “That is people’s opinion.

“I think I also play good in away games, especially this season.”

And in an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Wijnaldum opened up on last season’s drop into the Championship.

He said: “It is funny because last season we didn’t perform at a level as a whole team in away games for Newcastle but I was the only one who got the complaints.

“It is a team thing and no-one can do it by themselves.

“People expect more from you than other players but we have to be realistic.

“If a whole team doesn’t perform you cannot pick one player especially and say ‘he doesn’t do this or do that’.

“It is a fault of the whole team if you don’t deliver.”
