22,374 watched a match between two sides who scrapped it out without reaching any dizzy heights. United's mega-million-pound household names against a set of players most of which we wouldn't recognise if they were sat in your pub. Yet Wigan striker Jason Roberts' third goal of the season lifted Paul Jewell's side to second in the Premiership after claiming another prize scalp. Although they dropped to fourth by 5pm.

In the 65th minute came the game's most controversial moment when Baines appeared to clear from behind the goalline a downward header from Shearer after the Newcastle captain had met half-time substitute Emre's inswinging corner. But one of Dowd's assistants ruled it a clearance.

As Newcastle pressed they eventually found themselves up against 10 men in the 85th minute when McCulloch was shown a red card while lying prone on the ground in receiving treatment for his thigh-high tackle on Emre.
