Why Are 'Big Signings' Behind Us?

In November Newcastle United were officially quoted as being the 18th richest club in Europe.

Now, considering South American football is in turmoil; no club in the States is seen as a "big player on the world stage"; and certainly nothing in Asia, Africa or Australia can come close to challenging European football ... we are officially the 18th richest club in the world!

We have an owner who, allegedly, can buy an African country as a holiday home. So why are we a minor player in a big league?

Is there anyone out there who can answer those questions, because 50,000 season ticket holders would be interested to know the answers.

Evening Chronicle: "Newcastle United's knowledgeable crowd know fine well that the days of signing the world's big hitters are behind them (for now).

"Realistically, it doesn't look like we're going to get a Thierry Henry or a Ronaldinho this summer, in fact it looks like we're struggling to sign anybody at the moment.

"And that hit home when Geordie boy Gary Madine opted to sign a three-year contract with Carlisle United rather than try his luck at St James's Park.

"In a week when United were also linked with Dean Ashton - who Newcastle approached twice before he signed his new deal - the England striker's future is now in the East End of London for the next five years.

"And Bafetimbi Gomis, the French star, has opted to stay with St Etienne despite interest from United."
