For those of you unsure of just how amusing a decision this is, let me remind you of some of Wilkinson’s finest career moments.

Whilst temporary manager of England he chose to recall three of Arsenal’s legendary but ageing and slow defence, who had habitually leaked goals in the Champions League. France ran out 2-0 winners, with Nicolas Anelka outpacing the English defence at will.

In charge of Leeds he managed to sign the combined talents of Thomas ‘Sumo’ Brolin, Ian Rush, Carlton Palmer and Vinny Jones.

Memorably decided to sell Leeds best player, Eric Cantona, to their closest rivals for a discount fee and then watched him play a crucial role in his new club’s decade long dominance of English football. Any rumours that Kevin Phillips is on his way to St James’ Park for £250,000 are to be welcomed.

Elsewhere, Exeter disappointingly announced that they have decided not to appoint Gazza as manager.

Titus Bramble has spoken about how he is feeling the pressure at Newcastle. I’ve not been impressed with Titus so far, but if can recapture his form of two years ago he’ll prove to be a good long term bet.

I’d also like to thank Matt Reeder of the Yorkshire Post for his profile of David O’Leary, which contained the line: "It now seems likely that O’Leary simply has too much baggage to be considered for a top job. Or even Sunderland."
