Nicolas Anelka was so close to joining the Mags last summer, and perhaps if Fat Fred had emptied his big pants and added the loose change he probably would already be at St James' Park.
So forget about the Dingles from exotic places, trust us when we say Graeme Souness has re-ignited his interest in Anelka and is finally hoping to land the Fenerbahce striker in January.
Fred couldn't raise the cash for Michael Owen AND Anelka, and he probably put his money on the right man. But Alan Shearer has only six months of his career left and the chairman doesn't want another "Shearer-type" situation when Owen is leading the line by himself.
The Frenchman has scored five goals in 13 appearances so far this season and the player has hardly hit it off with the Fenerbahce coach. The time is right to tempt him back to English football, and Souness will head the queue.
