Police have told the Newcastle owner "no away shirt will be allowed in any section of the Stadium of Light apart from the section for visitors. That includes the director's boxes.

"It can intimidate the home supporters."

So Ashley has a decision to make, and the one he is considering is offering a swap with a Newcastle fan so he can sit with the Toon Army, and offer someone a day in the "posh end" ... in the director's box.

Chris Mort: "We are very excited about Saturday, it is a big match and both sides are going into it more desperate for a win than usual, I suspect.

"Sunderland are looking to get a win under the belt, but so are we.

"Mike will be there on Saturday - definitely.

"He definitely wants to wear his Newcastle shirt.

"Mike is not wearing his shirt to games to embarrass the opposition or put them in a difficult position.

"He wants to be and sees himself as a Newcastle United supporter and knows fans wear the shirts - he wants to be part of that.

"Therefore he will want to wear his on Saturday.

"Mike's role is one of a supporter, but my role is chairman and I need to play the chairman function.

"Part of that is abiding by the normal dress code.

"I need to wear the business hat and Mike will wear the supporter's hat."
