With the expected departure of Andy Johnson to Fulham for £13million, Moyes now has the funds to make a move for 27-year-old Smith, who could be available for as little as £1.5million after costing the Magpies £6million from Manchester United in 2007.
Moyes: "I am hoping we will have some in before the start of the season.
"But I am not going to turn around and say I am totally confident because you never know what happens.
"But, yes, I am hoping that we will end up getting a few in."
