Sir Bobby defiant in defeat

Sir Bobby

"It's the worst week I've ever had. I don't think I've ever had a week where we've lost three games at home.

"I don't think I've lost three consecutive games at home in my life, let alone a week. Needless to say, it's been a very traumatic, dramatic, horrible seven days.

"This team finished third last season and you don't lose in one week what we've built up in three years.

"Yes, we've got one point out of nine and have to realise that's got to change because if it doesn't, we'll be in big trouble.

"Yes, we're in a dogfight. But it's the fight in the dog which gets you out of trouble, and we'll fight. We'll row together in the same boat.

"It's important that we just keep our heads. The feeling within the club is very firm and strong and healthy.

"The players will get us out of trouble. We've just got to stick together. We're a united club, a united family and we'll get ourselves out of this.

"We're ten days into a season, not ten months. We've lost two league matches and got knocked out of the Champions League.

"But we've not been relegated, we're in the UEFA Cup and we've got a great young squad.

"The players gave everything today - every last one of them. They couldn't have done any more.

"But we didn't get behind Birmingham at any point, didn't come up with any good throughballs or get good quality delivery in from wide positions.

"So we know what we're not doing that we were doing last year and we're trying as hard as we can to get back to that.

"Gary has not cost us the match because he paraded up and down the left flank brilliantly and won some vital headers.

"I rested Olivier Bernard and, on today's evidence, we don't need a new left back. I also thought Titus Bramble was outstanding. He never put a foot wrong.”

Steve Bruce

"We're absolutely delighted.

"We seem to have come a long way in 12 months, which is excellent, and to come to Newcastle and play the way we did, I've got to be delighted with all of them.

"Their work-rate, their application was terrific and we also showed that we can play a little bit too.

"You can talk about tactics until you're blue in the face, but it's all about 11 players going on the pitch, and at the end of the day, they played well.

"They've come up here and relished the challenge of taking on Newcastle, and we thoroughly deserved it.

"The only thing I have to say is, at this level, we've had four or five great opportunities and only took one, so that was disappointing."
