The striker has been battling away for the best part of a month, despite being troubled by his hernia, but he knows he would be on the sidelines for up to a month if he had the op.
Apparently United are going to wait for the next international break - there are no Premiership games between November 5 and 18 because of the World Cup play-offs - before looking at the situation again.
Shearer has had operations on hernias in the past, and healed quickly, but United have been absolutely decimated by injuries and this is not a good time to add to it.
