Roeder is hoping Dyer's England exertions have not taken too much out of him because the 28-year-old midfielder played the whole 90 minutes of Wednesday night's disappointing 1-0 defeat by Spain at Old Trafford. Roeder had asked Steve McClaren to give him only part of the game.

Roeder: "I thought that overall, Kieron Dyer did very well. It was his first game for almost two years for England. But I was surprised to see him play the full 90 minutes."

Newcastle goalkeeper Steve Harper can put his mind at rest,  Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso (who scored against Harper from 60yds at Anfield earlier in the season) misses the match at St James' Park due to a one-match suspension.
