Alan Pardew: “I think we should have won.

s

“At 1-0, if we hadn’t have conceded for another five or 10 minutes, I think we’d have beat them, maybe 2-0.

“On the break, we always looked threatening, but we gave away possession in the central area, and we were a little bit open.

“A really clever ball from Jose has caught us out. The game changed at that point. We lost our captain shortly after that, and then it was backs against the wall.

“Still we threatened and Papiss (Demba Cisse) had a great chance, and perhaps should have taken a touch.

“It was a difficult emotional game, full of hurly-burly stuff.

“(Ferguson and Ameobi) did terrific, and I was pleased with them.

“Steven and Danny did well. Danny did well considering he wasn’t in the team. His mentality was terrific. It was a tough day for us.

“They were brilliant – I’m glad we gave them something.

“If we’d picked up three injuries, had the captain sent off and if we’d lost the game it would have been a really bad day.”
