Alan Pardew: “I think you could see at the end the players’ emotion.
“They gave everything. I don’t think you could argue that we did not give everything to the cause, and sometimes in football you don’t get your just desserts.
“It hurts – I just feel I can only take them game by game, really.
“The performance was to a great extent a really good performance, and on another day we win, but it’s not to be.
“I felt we got wrapped up in the emotion of the derby.
“We gave far too many fouls away, some strange moments in that first half. The passion of the game gets on top of you.”
