Olivier Giroud Snubs Newcastle Switch in Favour of Serie A Challenge With Inter

Newcastle appear to have failed in their bid to add the firepower of Olivier Giroud to their squad this January, with the Frenchman favouring a move to San Siro with Inter.

The 33-year-old has become merely a reserve option for the Blues this season, making seven appearances across all competitions and scoring just once. However, with a wealth of experience and a proven goalscoring ability in the Premier League, the veteran attacker remains an attractive target to a host of European clubs.

Newcastle made Giroud one of their first-choice strike targets this month, and were agonisingly close to getting a deal done. The Magpies nearly persuaded him to make the move to St. James' Park, but have failed to get the transfer over the line – as 90min reported on Tuesday morning, the forward looks set to join Italian giants Inter as they look to bolster their attack in their bid for the Serie A title.

Newcastle will be disappointed with their failure to acquire Giroud, but will now instead shift their focus to an array of other targets.

Steve Bruce

Head coach Steve Bruce is set to have a meeting with club owner Mike Ashley to discuss their transfer plans, and fans will be delighted to know that their manager has made some promising comments regarding their relationship, although he admitted that finding the right players is a challenge.

“You have to have a strong relationship with the owner or CEO and it is very, very strong at the moment. I’m not just going to say to him, we have to have x and y and they’re not good enough. The problem we have at the minute is finding that one who is available."
