Freddy Shepherd still wants to see St James' Park a sea of black and white on Saturday BUT every fan attending this Saturday's Premiership opener will NOT be given a black and white scarf!

Shepherd: "We were given a sample, but the ones sent to us are nowhere near as good quality and we could not insult our fans by handing them out ... even for free! We will go ahead with the idea, but with a better supplier at another time". This was the article we published this week ....

FREE SCARF FOR EVERY TOON FAN

Freddy Shepherd wants to see St James' Park a sea of black and white on Saturday and he is happy for Newcastle United to pay the bill. Every fan attending this Saturday's Premiership opener at Wigan Athletic will be given a black and white scarf, just like they were at Alan Shearer's testimonial.

Shepherd: "When the fans at Alan's testimonial started waving the scarves it was one of those moments that made the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. It was the talk of football and even now, people still bring it up in conversation.

"I hope the scarf waving will become a tradition at home games. When St James's Park is buzzing, there's no better ground in the world for atmosphere.

"That's why we have decided to start the new season by giving a black and white scarf to every Newcastle fan coming to the Wigan game. We want them to wave the scarves during the game and help Glenn Roeder and the team get off to a winning start.

"And the message is clear: We want the fans to bring the scarves to every game and help us keep St. James's as a fortress that no visiting team will fancy coming to."
