Newcastle fans ‘racist’ slur from Sky

Wedderburn appeared to have little knowledge about what actually happened in the Hasselbaink incident, but continued to use the question anyway. The irony of asking the question to hooligan author and well known friend of football Dougie Brimson appeared lost on the presenter.

The incident in question occurred at Stamford Bridge, not Newcastle, and involved a tiny minority of fans shouting racist abuse at Chelsea’s Dutch striker. These supporters were subsequently confronted by other Newcastle fans who were appalled by their behaviour and the incident was over very quickly.

Whilst any abuse of this kind from our supporters is unacceptable, for Sky to compare it to events in Slovakia is grossly unfair and portrays Newcastle fans in an untrue light. It is noticeable that Wedderburn completely ignored the role that our fans played in stamping out this incident.

Certainly we should be backing the Kick Racism Out of Football campaign, but equally we shouldn’t stand by and let the reputation of Newcastle fans be damaged by ill-informed TV journalists.
