Mags v Mackems - It Is What It Is

Last updated : 10 December 2014 By Footy Mad - Editor

A nice gesture I'm sure, but I feel very uneasy about this.

This is the most fierce derby in English football, only bettered (in my opinion) by the Old Firm in Glasgow.

Take away the passion and that hatred, and what are we left with?

Black and whites and red and whites mingled happily at the Bridge Hotel in Newcastle at an event organised by the Football Supporters Federation.

Is that good or bad?

I am Old School, and the derby is a major part of my life. It shouldn't become 'just another game'.

I was involved in the last meeting between the 'clans' back in the late 1990s when fanzine editors from both sides met at a pub in Boldon to talk about ways of getting Sir John Hall to give the Mackems tickets for St James' Park.

Hall decided Sunderland fans were not welcome at SJP and refused to give them tickets for the away end; then Sunderland followed suit.

We need away fans at this fixture and we got more than 53,000 Mags and Mackems to sign to say Hall should have a rethink.

We even did a march from Roker Park to St James' - 11 fans from either club - and it was covered by the BBC.

All went well, but Hall refused to budge.

The next fixture we faced each other there was no friendship, we were back to doing what we both do best, hating each other.

"Hate" is a nasty word, but I am one of many Geordie supporters who would never be seen dead in red!

It's tradition; it's how we were brought up; you DON'T wear anything red!

As I say, I am old school, and I will NEVER change. When it comes to Newcastle v Sunderland ... I hate the bastards!

Back to the meeting last night ...

The evening featured a question and answer session with former Toon star Steve Howey, 43, and Sunderland legend Kevin Ball, 50, as well as a set by Newcastle comedian Gavin Webster.

In the black and white contingent was Barry Sweeney, whose son Liam was killed along with John Alder on flight MH17 as they made their way to watch Newcastle in a pre-season friendly in New Zealand.

Steve Howey (told the Chronicle): “I think it is a good thing, nobody wants to take away the passion. I think both clubs have moved closer with (the death of) Sir Bobby (Robson) and the lads losing their lives.

“I was away at the time, when I heard the news I was touched by it.

“We want it to be a good hostile environment but more importantly safe.

“If me and Bally coming up here helps to support it, I am all for that.”

Barry Sweeney: “It is a momentous moment. Did we ever think this would have happened a year ago? Not likely.

“If we can move forward, keep it going, because the last two years have been a little bit nasty, let us start enjoying the football, regardless of who wins.

“If this can make things better.

“If we can carry Liam and John’s name forward in respect of the derby, go forward with it.

“I think if the two of them are looking down, they are the two people that could change this forever. If that is it, good on two Geordies.”
