And he praised his team-mates for answering their critics after a successful Easter weekend.

The Magpies were booed from the pitch on March 31 after a desperately poor 1-0 defeat by Manchester City which left manager Glenn Roeder and his players firmly in the firing line.

Charlton new boss Alan Pardew said "big clubs like Manchester City and Newcastle could suffer because their fans know they are not producing, while we at The Valley have a happy crowd".

However, Harper says the boys are back on track.

Harper: "People have questioned the spirit at the club in recent weeks, but when you see Nobby Solano and Steven Taylor throwing themselves in front of the ball, I hope that shows people there is a fighting spirit here.

"We got a lot of criticism as a team after the Manchester City defeat. Some of it was deserved, but a lot of it was over the top.

"A lot of people expected us to go to Sheffield United and get nothing, but I think we have proved a few people wrong by taking four points this weekend.

"The fans are a 12th man when they are behind us, but the players can get them going when they show passion and commitment, which we did.

"But our dressing room was the more disappointed because we created more chances.

"They did not create a great deal and the lads in front of Shay and myself were outstanding."
