Niall Quinn believes there will be more outs than ins at Sunderland this January: "I think it is no secret that we are top heavy with players here.

"There is no sort of big owners throwing big demands on me - I run the club and they allow me to do it in my own way - but we are top heavy for nothing more than say sporting reasons.

"Basically what I am saying to you is that there will probably be more outs than ins but if there is a touch of quality to be had somewhere and we think it's really good for the club then we are in a position to do that too and Roy and myself and the powers that be will look into that as the time comes."

Gary Megson fears Bolton run the risk of being dragged into another relegation dogfight if they fail to sign new players in the January transfer window.

Despite winning three of their last four games ahead of tomorrow's trip to Sunderland, Megson warned that new arrivals must be recruited next month.

The Trotters boss said: "We've got a really thin squad and that's something we've got to address in January because we won't get away with it again.

"At the moment we are doing okay injury-wise because we've got an excellent medical team.

"They deserve a great deal of credit for helping us to work with a small squad.

"But we will be skating on the thinnest of thin ice if we try to get through the remainder of the season with the squad at its current size.

"There has been a hatchet job done on the squad's size.

"You never know what's going to happen if someone fancies one of your players and makes you an offer you can't refuse.

"That happened last year with Nicolas Anelka. Having said that, we wanted to refuse it but Nic didn't.

"Whether that will happen again I don't know."
