Former Newcastle defender Andy Griffin has set his heart on leading Stoke City in their first Premier League campaign.

The 29-year-old defender took over the captaincy last season and hopes to continue in the role in the top flight.

Griffin: "Who's to say I'm going to be captain? I don't know. The manager might bring someone in who he thinks is more suitable.

"But if it is the case that I lead the team out in the first Premier League game, it would be a huge honour for me.

"In the Championship we were a big, physical, dominant team. We played a direct way of football which suited us down to the ground.

"In the Premier League, first and foremost you have to do the ugly side before you earn the right to play football. If a team doesn't work hard, it doesn't get results.

"Man United work hard, but also have the fantastic talent in all the players they have.

"We haven't got that, but hopefully, with two or three additions, it will be a very interesting season for us."
