Portsmouth and Birmingham wanted him but Rangers entered the fray.

Boumsong spent six months at Ibrox, following a free transfer from Auxerre, before famously winning an £8million move to Newcastle.

Faye: "Last week, my agent told me about interest from Rangers and some clubs from the Premiership.

"When he told me about Rangers, I spoke to Boumsong and he told me many things about the club. He said so many good things about Rangers.

"I also had interest from Portsmouth and Birmingham City but I didn't hesitate to sign for Rangers.

"I played in Newcastle for two years and they have big fans, they are a big club. It's the same here as well.

"I'm lucky to be here.

"It's a very big club and I have a chance to play in the Champions League. It's a long time since I played there.

"For me it's a big challenge to sign for Rangers and play in the Champions League.

"I came here to give everything I have to the club and I hope to do something good here. I've come here to do my best.

"I hope to play every game and win every game. That is why I have come here."

2005-6 Amdy Faye 35/10 0

Started his career at Auxerre. Born 12 March 1977.

Defensive midfield player bought from Portsmouth in January 2005 by Graeme Souness, but didn't have a very good first season.

He didn't score for Newcastle, sitting very deep, probably too deep at times.

Souness left and Roeder sold him to Charlton in August 2006.
