Title chasing French side Nice had been interested, but coach Gernot Rohr told the Times: "I cannot be insensitive to the proposition of such a player. I told him that we did not have much money at the club, but he assured me that money was not his priority.

"I suggested he should think about it all, lose weight and be ready to undergo huge physical preparation. The ball is in his court."
