A £4.2million bid for the young player was rejected by the Suffolk Club, but talks are ongoing so there may still be light at the end of the tunnel.

"Ipswich have sadly been relegated and I think that Titus can develop in the Premiership with us," Dyer told the Evening Chronicle.

"He can develop into a world-class central defender. I know he had a disappointing time last season - possibly he got a bit stale.

"It can happen with young players. Take Rio Ferdinand, for example. He had a dodgy season or more at West Ham when he was making mistakes. But look at him now. Leeds have got one of the best defenders in the world.

"Titus has got all the attributes, including great skill and strength. Our manager Bobby Robson can bring out the best in anyone and he can do it with Titus.

"Ipswich have done well for him and he's done well for Ipswich. I think a move now can give Titus a fresh start and I hope he ends up with us at Newcastle."
