He was an Ashington-born full-back who came through the ranks and made 45 appearances for Newcastle between 1974/78.

In 1978 we played Wrexham in the FA Cup and Ray did what Stoke striker Peter Crouch did on Saturday ... spun round, hadn't a clue if he should cross or shoot, and bought a lottery ticket.

He hit the ball so sweetly it was a "once in a lifetime moment" - they either go into Row ZZ or the top corner of the net. 99.9% it's Row ZZ.

Did either player mean to hit the top corner ... both said yes ... but I think God was on their side.

Peter Crouch: "I do it every day in training, practise volleying. It is something I have always enjoyed doing since I was a kid.

"When the ball dropped I tried to pop it up and tried the volley technique.

"I do do it a lot in practice - it is not something that just happens - but they don't always fly in like that.

"I think that was probably the best one to be honest."
