Bruno Guimaraes wins North East FWA Player of the Year award for 2022

Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has been named North East Football Writers’ Association’s Player of the Year for 2022.

The prestigious award is regarded as a huge honour in the North East, and Guimaraes has claimed it after a brilliant 12 months at St James' Park following his move from Lyon.

Guimaraes has followed on from Newcastle teammate Allan Saint-Maximin, who took the award for 2021. Sunderland's Ross Stewart finished in second place after helping the Black Cats win promotion to the Championship, with Magpies vice-captain Kieran Trippier coming third.

Durham Women’s Northern Ireland international Sarah Robson retained the Women’s Player of the Year award.

Robson, who plays under her maiden name McFadden for her country, featured in the summer's European Championships.

NEFWA secretary Colin Young said: "After another exciting year for North East football, we’ve got two extremely worthy recipients of two of our main awards.

"Bruno Guimaraes was a clear winner of the Men’s vote after a fantastic first year at Newcastle and Sarah Robson’s Women’s award underlines the way in which Durham continue to be a great footballing story for the region."
