Bellamy set to sign new deal

The Welsh wizard was apparently promised that if he shone during his first season at St James’ then he would receive a lucrative contract extension.

Well Craig’s certainly kept his side of the bargain and Sir Bobby will sit down with Bellamy’s advisors in the coming week to ensure that he will spend the bulk of his career with Newcastle.

"I've explained to Craig that the future of this club looks pretty good," said Sir Bobby.

"He's seen the stadium, the fans, the calibre of players we have signed and are still trying to sign and I know he likes what he's seen.

"In my opinion, Craig has found a great place to be and a great team to play in and it's perfect for an ambitious young professional. He won't find much better.

"We have been waiting for Craig to prove to us that he is fully fit and there's nothing wrong with that. We've invested a lot of money in him already in terms of his initial fee and the medical costs associated with his injury.

"And he's already on a good contract now. He jumped at the chance to sign it last summer, so it can't be that bad.

"All I know is that Newcastle want Craig Bellamy and Craig Bellamy wants to be at Newcastle.

"We should be able to shake hands and agree a mutually beneficial situation any day now but talks have been going on for some time and they may go on for a while longer.

"I just think that when Craig takes a look around at the young players we have here and the potential within the squad he must realise he's in the right place at the right time."

Bellamy is believed to want parity with the clubs top earners – Alan Shearer, Kieron Dyer and Shay Given – and this would appear to be fair as he has been our top performer since joining from Coventry.
