Alan Shearer reportedly turned down the request from Steve McClaren to be England number two because the BBC had offered him a more lucrative deal.

The Guardian reports that his appointment 'was vetoed on grounds of finance.'

"Alan wanted to work for Steve but it didn't happen because of the terms."

The Newcastle legend has signed a four-year deal with the BBC.
