Are Birmingham Backing Their Boss More Than Mags Back KK?

Last updated : 16 March 2008 By Footy Mad - Editor
Was it because Mike Ashley would not release the funds or because Kevin Keegan could not attract the big names like he could back in his first spell as Newcastle boss?

An interesting question indeed, as we now hear KK has just two games to save his Magpies career (perhaps just ONE if the result goes badly wrong at Brum) and Ashley has Dennis Wise waiting in the wings.

Keegan claims he had a number of players on his shopping list back in January, but chairman Chris Mort said: "what we need are young players" and he made it clear Ashley was not going to throw cash at United's problem.

Just as a matter of interest ... here are the signings Newcastle and Birmingham made during that transfer window ... and the reports when they signed.

NEWCASTLE UNITED

Tamas Kadar (£900,000) Newcastle have made Hungarian defender Tamas Kadar their first signing since Kevin Keegan was named as their new manager.
The 17-year-old, who impressed the Magpies during a recent trial, has signed a four-and-half year contract at St James' Park.
Newcastle are reported to have paid Zalaegerszegi 1.2million euros (£900,000) for Kadar - making him the most expensive defender in Hungarian football history.
"My dream has come true, that I have signed to play for a club from the Premiership," Kadar told Zalaegerszegi's official website.
"My goal is, of course, to fight and grab a place in the first team as soon as ossible."

Wesley Ngo Baheng (undisc.) Newcastle have signed teenage striker Wesley Ngo Baheng from French Division Two side Le Havre.
The 18-year-old signed a pre-contract agreement with the Magpies last year before completing his move when the transfer window opened.
Bolton had wanted to sign the striker but were unable to reach an agreement with Le Havre.

Ben Tozer (undisc.) Newcastle have completed the signing of promising young Swindon defender Ben Tozer.
The 17-year-old has been in negotiations with the Magpies since the end of December but both parties have now agreed an undisclosed fee and a four-and-a-half-year deal.
Tozer joined the Robins from Plymouth in the summer and was handed his senior debut in the club's Carling Cup tie against Charlton in August.
He has since gone on to make seven first-team appearances for Swindon but will move to St James' Park with immediate effect.

BIRMINGHAM CITY

James McFadden (£5million) Birmingham have completed the signing of Everton striker James McFadden in a deal worth £6million.
The Scotland international is reunited with Blues boss Alex McLeish after passing a medical and agreeing personal terms on a three-and-a-half-year contract with an option for a further two years.
Birmingham, who also confirmed the transfer, have agreed to make a down-payment of £5m with another £1m depending on appearances.
McLeish is confident McFadden can make a big impact during the next five years with Blues.
The former Scotland boss said: "I am delighted to have signed James. He is not just a guy who can score great goals. He can also create things and make things happen and he has got a big heart.
"He is the type of player you know you are going to get everything from for the entire 90 minutes of a game.
"He has matured. He has had his initiation at Everton in the Premier League and for me he is a definite Premier League player. He has shown that in a very good Everton side this season.
"When he has come into the side, I am not so sure anyone has looked as good as him."

David Murphy (£1.5million)
Birmingham have completed the signing of Hibernian left-back David Murphy after the player passed a medical.
Blues have agreed to pay the Scottish club £1.5million for the Hartlepool-born 23-year-old.
The 23-year-old made 13 Premier League appearances with Middlesbrough before moving to Hibs and manager Alex McLeish believes the left-back is keen to prove himself in England's top flight.
"He wants to prove himself in the Premiership," McLeish told the club's official website.
"Any time I've seen him in Scotland over the past two or three years he's a full-back who likes to get forward but has obviously got good defensive qualities as well.
"He's a player I've admired for a long time and I made enquiries to see if he had any Scottish blood in him when I had the Scotland job because we would have certainly brought him into the fold with the national team given the displays that we saw up there."

Mauro Zarate (loan) Birmingham have signed Argentinian striker Mauro Zarate on loan until the end of the season in their bid to preserve Premier League status.
Zarate, whose move from Qatar's Al Sadd could be made permanent in the summer, follows the arrivals of David Murphy and James McFadden at St Andrews.
The 20-year-old hit his country's winner in the final of the Under-20 World Cup last year.
"He's one of the Argentinian young guns that were successful in the championships last summer," City manager Alex McLeish told the club website.
"I don't want to compare him to the Argentinian greats but he is of that mould. He has great balance and mobility.
"He can play anywhere along the front four. It's another bit of competition up there but more importantly it's somebody that we think can create something out of nothing."
