A move on the cards for Speed

New role for Speed?
One option he will be considering is moving Gary Speed to his international position of left-back, in order to allow Aaron Hughes to move into the centre of defence.

With Nikos Dabizas suspended Sir Bobby is unlikely to want to risk the inexperienced pair of O’Brien and Bramble together or to play the out of form Olivier Bernard at left-back.

So a defence of Griffin, Speed, Hughes and O’Brien (or possibly Bramble after the Irishman’s performance at Blackburn) looks to be the best available option.

Speed moving to full-back would also allow us to field the more creative pair of Jermaine Jenas and Hugo Viana in the centre of midfield, for a game we must score in.

The other major headache is who to play up front alongside Alan Shearer, with Bellamy also suspended.

If Dyer is fit it is almost certain to be him, but otherwise Robson will have to choose between Ameobi, Lua Lua and Robert.

Possible team for Wednesday night:

Given; Griffin, Speed, Hughes, Bramble; Robert, Viana, Jenas, Solano; Shearer, Dyer.
