All three started and Ameobi scored England’s first goal, before two second half goals for Arsenal’s Francis Jeffers and one for West Ham’s Joe Cole handed England an easy win.

In Iceland Brian Kerr and Gary Caldwell both played in Scotland Under-21s 2-0 win.

Caldwell set up Mackem Kevin Kyle for the opener and Kerr played Celtic’s Simon Lynch through for the clincher.

The news was less good for Andy O’Brien who has had to pull out of the Republic of Ireland’s squad for the game against Switzerland on Wednesday with a hamstring injury. The centre-half is already looking doubtful for next week’s trip to Blackburn with the injury.
