They are however just guessing that we are the club the World Cup star is referring to when he said: "I have reached an agreement with an English club, but I cannot say the club's name. Aston Villa know the club's name. I will play for the biggest club in England.

"I'm happy in England. I want to stay there. I have to think my family's future. There were offers from Italy and Spain. I'm really not thinking about moving back to Turkey at the moment."

However Villa claim to know nothing about the story and a spokesman for them said: "Graham Taylor made clear we had received no concrete offers for Alpay last week and nothing has changed in that respect.

"The player remains on the transfer-list, but we are no closer to a deal."

Whether or not we want a player who has given up at his current club is another matter, but there is no doubt he’s a talented player.

Meanwhile reported target Michael Reiziger is in talks with Liverpool and looks set to sign before the end of the week and other press reports have again linked us with Nottingham Forest centre back Michael Dawson.
