Newcastle United – the richest club in the world?

Last updated : 11 November 2002 By Martyn Elliott

The world’s media is obviously labouring under the misapprehension that Freddy Shepherd is about to hand Sir Bobby an unlimited transfer budget, as the last week has seen us linked with no fewer than 19 players.

Here are those rumours in full:

Ian Harte (Leeds Utd) £2.5million

Terry Venables is believed not to rate the Irish international left-back and will off load him in January. A fine dead-ball specialist, but also the slowest player in the Premiership.

John Terry (Chelsea) £6million

Chelsea are set to sell the England Under-21 defender after he failed to agree a new contract.

Ariel Ortega (Fenerbahce) £20million

The Argentinian playmaker has failed to settle in Turkey since his pre-season move. Unlikely to provide good value at £20million.

Javier de Pedro (Real Sociedad) £5million

Sir Bobby has apparently had the Spanish World Cup star watched and will make the left winger his top target in January.

Edgar Davids (Juventus) Part-exchange for Hugo Viana

Viana is unhappy after failing to become a first team regular and will leave for Juventus in a £10million deal including Davids.

Brett Emerton (Feyenoord) £8million

The arrogant Aussie will move to St James’ Park in order to fill the right-back slot and provide cover for Nobby.

Kiki Musampa (Malaga) £11.5million

Cash strapped Malaga will cash-in on their greatest asset in January.

Luis Figo (Real Madrid) Free

The Portuguese midfielder is keen to come to England and work with Sir Bobby again.

Michael Bridges (Leeds) £4million

Fit again Geordie is keen to leave Elland Road to join his boyhood heroes.

Massimo Ambrosini (AC Milan) £4million

The midfielder is keen to leave the San Siro to find first team football, but his club will not sell to a Serie A rival.

Jaap Stam (Lazio) £8million

Lazio can no longer afford his wages and are looking to sell asap.

Rob Hulse (Crewe) £3million

17 goals already this season and Sir Bobby is looking for a goalscorer to provide cover for Alan Shearer.

Josep Guardiola (Roma) £4million

Veteran Spanish playmaker doesn’t like the defensive style of football in Italy and is keen to work with Sir Bobby again.

Fabio Macellari (Ex-Bologna) Free

Out of contract Italian defender will sign immediately to help bolster the defence.

Philippe Christanval (Barcelona) £4million

The French international defender is unwanted at the Nou Camp and is keen to play in the Premiership.

Javier Portillo (Real Madrid) £5million

The Spanish striker is unable to get into the Madrid team since the arrival of Ronaldo and fancies swapping La Liga for the Premiership.

Darren Ambrose (Ipswich) £4million

The teenage winger will arrive as cover for Nobby. The story is still around despite both clubs denying it.

David Batty (Leeds) Free

Out of favour at Elland Road, Batty will return to provide cover in midfield.

Carlos Sandro (Malaga) £4million

The midfielder has impressed scouts watching Kiki Masampa and may arrive in the summer.

Please note that no more than one of these rumours is actually likely to become fact.
