More January arrivals rumoured

Emerton finds his level
Feyenoord’s Brett Emerton is reported to be arriving for £8million in January, this despite our decision to pull out of a deal to buy him in August and the fact that the Australian has been slagging us off ever since.

The fact that he’s not very good seems to have escaped most people as well.

The Darren Ambrose story appears in most of the Sunday papers, despite the fact that we have already denied that we will be bidding for the Ipswich youngster.

Last weekend’s rumour about us watching several Crewe stars, has grown and apparently Sir Bobby is now interested in Rob Hulse, Kenny Lunt, Neil Sorvel, David Wright and Clayton Ince.

Just for the record, these superstars were beaten 2-0 at Wigan yesterday.

Another old one to re-appear is that we will compete with Villa to sign Leeds’ David Batty in January. This story was mystifyingly accompanied by the following quotes, which seem to say that Batty is definitely staying at Elland Road.

"Almost as soon as the gaffer got here he pulled me in and told me I could leave. People don't know that," said Batty.

"He wanted me to go out on loan or leave but I've got another 18 months left of my contract and I have every intention of staying and seeing it out.

"When he first came he even asked if I was interested in the coaching side. But I've never had an interest in that.

"I love playing at Elland Road in front of our fans. I don't want to go to another club and play in front of a lesser crowd."

Surely a Nationwide League club is a more likely destination if Batty does leave Elland Road.

A couple of foreign stars have reportedly expressed an interest in coming to the Premiership, although not necessarily to Newcastle.

Gabriel Batistuta will leave Roma in the summer and is keen to find an English club.

He has been a great player, but is now way past his best as we saw in the World Cup, so hopefully he won’t be one for us. And he’s an Argentinian with a mullet.

Of more interest is that Real Madrid are allegedly prepared to sell French international midfielder Claude Makelele for as little as £6million in January.

This is one player who would certainly improve our team, but whether or not we could beat the likes of Inter, Roma, Arsenal and Man United to his signature is another matter.
