Interest wanes in defenders

Rovers chief executive John Williams claimed not to know anything about their reported £1million bid for Dabizas, but stopped short of ruling the move out completely.

And the Evening Chronicle claims that Rangers have pulled out of a move for the older Caldwell brother, as they fear that a transfer tribunal would set the fee too high.

Although he is out of contract in the summer Newcastle are entitled to a fee for him because he has come through the youth system and is still under the age of 24.

Rangers are apparently concerned that the fact he is a current international and is keeping more experienced players out of our side will see the transfer fee climb well beyond the £1million mark.

If this is true it may well leave Caldwell with few options other than to accept the 12-month deal on offer at St James’ Park and fight for his place.
