A dramatic late winner from Jermaine Jenas saw Newcastle take all three points from their trip to White Hart Lane.
The game looked to be heading for a draw when Jenas popped up in the 90th minute to score a scrappy but vital goal.
Spurs enjoyed the better of the early exchanges with Gus Poyet seeing a shot deflected wide and Simon Davies failing to connect properly when he had a clear sight of goal.
However the home side grew frustrated with Newcastle's offside trap and when Robbie Keane limped off in the 36th minute with an ankle injury it knocked them even further out of their stride.
Sensing their opportunity the visitors pushed forward and almost took the lead with the best effort of the half when Olivier Bernard's stinging 20-yard shot brought a fine save from Kasey Keller.
That was the last of the action before the break but the game exploded into life early in the second half as both teams were guilty of making errors at the back. First Shay Given made a real hash of a clearance and had to be alert to race back to his goal and push Poyet's shot around the post.
Five minutes later Spurs were sure they had taken the lead when Titus Bramble completely missed Darren Anderton's hopeful through ball allowing Poyet to calmly slot the ball past Given, only for the Uruguayan's goal celebration to be cut short by a linesman's flag.
Almost immediately the Tottenham defence tried to repay the favour as they gifted the ball to Craig Bellamy on the edge of the area but after working himself room to shoot the Welsh striker hit his effort straight at Keller.
The game then went strangely quiet until the final five minutes when the extra fitness of the young Newcastle side began to tell, prompting the visitors to go for the kill.
With Spurs rocking they almost snatched the winner when a slip by Goran Bunjevcevic gave Alan Shearer a sight of goal and when Keller saved his shot Jenas dragged the rebound wide.
However, Jenas made no mistake in the last minute when Keller had once again made a great save to deny Bellamy, but the Spurs keeper could do nothing to stop the midfielder hooking home the loose ball.
Even then Spurs could have grabbed an equaliser in injury time when Poyet nodded the ball down to makeshift striker Gary Doherty, but the substitute blazed his volley wide.
