Campbell is the most experienced player in the Newcastle squad, he's won just about everything there is to win, so why not?

On the other hand, Chris Hughton has formed a bond amongst his players and perhaps he doesn't want a newcomer to walk in and take charge of the show.

This leaves Kevin Nolan or Alan Smith as the obvious players to wear the armband.

Chris Hughton: "I can categorically say that Sol will not be captain.

"I can completely rule that out and there is no truth in the talk that he will skipper this season.

"That is still to be confirmed."

However, former Toon midfielder Rob Lee has described Campbell as “captain material”.

Rob Lee: “He’s been captain at every club he’s been at, he’s done the job at Tottenham, Arsenal and Portsmouth, so he knows exactly what’s needed.

“He’s certainly captain material in my opinion.

“That can help Newcastle this season because it’s going to be a tough season for them.

“I know him very well from playing for England and playing against him many times in my career.

“He will be great in the dressing room and he was only playing Premier League football last season for Arsenal, so that shows what he can do.

“If he can keep his fitness up then he’s going to be an asset.

“It gets harder keeping the fitness going as you get older but it can be achieved.”
