Woody deadline reported

Of course the major problem with that is Leeds publicly deny having received any bid for the player.

But Shepherd claimed: "I can confirm that Newcastle United have made a bid for Jonathan Woodgate and would consider it to be a fair price. We are now waiting for Leeds United to respond.

But he also warned: "We are not prepared to get involved with their internal politics."

It would appear that Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale is desperately trying to save face by avoiding the sale of Woodgate, but may still be forced into doing so by the club's desperate financial state.

With the position over Woodgate still unclear and time running out to get any deal completed before the transfer window closes, a number of papers have reported that United scouts were in France on Monday to watch Daniel van Buyten play in Marseille’s French Cup defeat to PSG.
