Woodgate's Replacement?

Last updated : 24 August 2004 By Tom Carr
Woody. Gone. Just like that. It's hard to believe, but I'm afraid it is true. It all happened so quickly and it still hasn't quite sunk in.

But Woodgate is in the past now and we have to look to the future.

At the moment we are been linked with many players and Freddy Shepherd has promised he will bring some more new faces in before the window closes.

But who should he bring in?

Rooney definitely shouldn't be an option. We don't want to blow all our money on one, brilliant though he may be, striker. If Rooney came, I think it would be the end of Shola and even more goals wolud be conceded.

Craig Moore is a possible target. The ex-Rangers skipper is out of favourite at Ibrox and was nearly put on the transfer list after his apparently 'delayed' return form the Olympics.

Garerth Barry would be welcome, but would come at a price. However, his central defensive capabilities are questionable.

Joseph Yobo would strenghthen the side, but I think we need a British leader, who shouts and organises our defence.

William Gallas would definitely control our back line, and would be available at around £6.5 million, so we would have enough cash left to bring someone else in as well.

Robert Huth is young, but is still considered better than our current centre-halves. He is out-of-favour at Chelsea and may fancy a move North.

I don't really mind who we get, as long as we get someone. And get someone soon!
