Women's World Cup ... How Can It Be Taken Seriously?

On the TV panel is our ex-midfielder Gavin Peacock, trying to add some 'street cred' to a competition that, at times, is hilarious!

And they couldn't have picked a nicer guy. He gave me his first interview as a Newcastle United player as I tapped him as he arrived at his Durham hotel following the transfer, and the man wouldn't have a bad word said against anyone ... or anything. So the BBC have picked the right man.

The TV coverage started earlier in the day with Germany thumping Argentina 11-0. Then the Yanks appeared with a goalkeeper who went up (unchallenged) for a corner, and pushed the ball into the back of her own net.

Yep ... funny stuff. Only made better watching some teams defending free-kicks on the edge of the penalty box. They would line-up in a straight line as expected, then duck when the ball came at them!

As for England? Having a femail commentator made it all the better.

With England leading 2-1 against Japan and time-wasting as best they could, (the goalkeeper and right-back dropped as though hit by a scud missile) things didn't go according to plan.

In fact it all went sadly wrong.

Time wasting is one thing ... so long as you're good at it ... but when the England striker broke clear of the back-line, then suddenly took the A19 away from the goalkeeper to the corner flag, you sensed this was a girl who had been "coached" a little too much.

Yes the big boys like Drogba, Ronaldo and Viduka can do it, but they know what they are doing, and have the build to stick out an arse and keep defenders away.

This girl got to the corner flag, then passed the ball to the opposing left-back!

Then the female Kenneth Wolstenholme said: "You can see her experience by going to the flag which is good to see" ... yet she had just GIVEN THE BALL AWAY!

Japan broke away, got a free-kick on the edge of the box, the England wall ducked ... England 2 Japan 2.

I have seen 7-year-olds in a schoolyard do better!

Girls ... stick to netball!
