Wise travelled to Devon with talent spotter Lil Fuccillo for a three-hour meeting with the 15-year-old striker and the youngster is ready to say 'yes' to the Geordies later this week.

It is a massive coup for Wise, who sold the club to Spear and his family despite interest from Portsmouth, Arsenal and Tottenham.

Newcastle look likely to pay over £1m in installments for the player.

England and Scotland are also battling it out for the 15-year-old's international commitment.

Spear has Scottish parents and may be tempted to sign up for the Tartan Army after the SFA made a move for him.

The Devon-born starlet plays for Argyle's under-18 side and is said to be similar to Rooney in style and strength.

Meanwhile, news in the Netherlands today suggests Newcastle United have an interest in HSV captain and playmaker, Rafael van der Vaart.

Van der Vaart was in fine form last season, captaining his side to 2nd place in the Bundesliga and chipping in with ten goals. This has lead to rumoured interest from Chelsea, Juventus and Valencia as the player has so far refused to sign a new contract at his German club.

However, sources in Holland suggest he is England bound with Newcastle leading the chase.
