Jack Colback jumped ship this summer, swapping red and white for black and white, and it has been suggested Wickham is willing to do the same.
Both players are/were popular at the Stadium of Shite, and a move to Tyneside would not go down well with the 'Unwashed'.
There appeared to be little chance of the 21-year-old earning fresh terms at the Stadium of Light at the end of March, with loan spells having been taken in at Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United.
Wickham was, however, recalled to Wearside to aid a survival bid and contributed five crucial goals as Sunderland preserved their Premier League status.
He is now considered to be an important figure, with the potential which saw him complete an £8million move in 2011 finally being fulfilled.
Wickham is, however, only tied to a deal until next summer, and Newcastle are ready to offer him the chance to move eight miles up the road.
Gus Poyet: “For me, Connor’s situation is clear. He needs to sign a new contract or we let him go – we sell him. There is nothing in between.
“He is an asset to the football club and we paid a lot of money for him.
“Last year, he was a key part of us staying up and he was very important. But he needs to realise that the club needs to look after the interests of the football club as well.
“I suppose that, one way or another, we are going to have an agreement.
“Which one of those is going to happen, I don’t know – it is not my job, that is (sporting director) Lee Congerton’s department.
“Last year I was the happiest one because I talked to him before he went to Sheffield Wednesday and I talked to him when he came back.
“I spoke to him when he came back from Leeds and I told him that every single player wants a run of four or five games.
“I told him that you won’t get that situation many times, but he had it with us and he responded.
“Now the situation has changed a little bit. But I am not worried.”
TRIBUTE TO NEWCASTLE FANS
Alan Pardew: "None of us would be sitting here without the fans.
"Owners and managers come and go, as do players, but the fans are always there, and these two guys in particular, to go to the lengths that they did to get out here, has brought home just how important supporters are to us.
"Sometimes when you lose lives in that manner, it puts into context what we do.
"This season we want to give their families something to remember them by, by having a successful season.
"It's important we represent ourselves in the right manner, especially after losing John and Liam - our supporters who were travelling out here.
"We have to conduct ourselves well on and off the pitch and get some strong results.
"That is what they would have wanted and that is what we want, so in memory of those guys in particular, we want this to be a successful tour.
"We have to honour these guys in the right manner because it does mean a lot to us. Their tragic loss has hurt the group.
"On Tuesday, I will be playing a very strong side. That is only right and fair in light of what's happened.
"A lot is made of the rivalry between the two cities, and of course that is there.
"But I would like to thank all the Sunderland fans who have paid tribute and helped raise a staggering amount already.
"I am very proud of Sunderland Football Club for the way they have conducted themselves and I want to thank them."
