Organisers said more than 1,000 parties have expressed interest in Newcastle United Supporters trust's campaign to buy out Mike Ashley.

Former Liverpool supporter Mark Jensen (editor of the Newcastle fanzine The Mag), who is one of the head figures in the Trust, said this week that the Trust had the belief they would raise the money.

Interim chairman Neil Mitchell: "Our negotiations are going to be conducted in the full view of the people who invest in Newcastle United.

"We've had thousands of expressions of interest and those people should be the first to know when we commence negotiations with the club.

"Let's be clear, these negotiations will be contacted on a commercial basis, with professional people representing the interest of the trust and investors.

"We see no benefit in meeting with Mr Ashley or his representatives until the campaign has fully got under way.

"The idea of the campaign is to bring trust and integrity back to the club, reflecting the values of the city as a whole."

The minimum investment for a private investor is £1,500, but fans can also show support by joining or donating to the trust and becoming a member.

The fund said it hasn't set a target, but Ashley is thought to want £100m for the club.

After the launch, The Gazette asked readers whether fans would be able to raise the £100m to buy out Ashley in our online poll with just 19 per cent saying 'yes'.
