The League Cup clash on Wednesday night will be a passionate affair, but what has Milner done to get under the skin of the Geordie fans?
Leeds-born Milner has won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and League Cup with City, and he claims that has led to abuse whenever the two teams meet.
But he always gave 100% in a black and white shirt; never slagged off the club or the supporters; and I cannot understand where it comes from.
He played 139 games for Newcastle before moving to Aston Villa, and it was never a case of "I'm leaving to further my career", although obviously he has with City.
He joined Villa ... FFS ... not Man Utd.
James Milner (talking to the Chronicle's sister Manchester newspaper): “I’ve had a few mixed receptions in all honesty but generally not too bad.
“I was warming up earlier this season and I had the odd shout from the stands which wasn’t ideal, but everyone is entitled to their opinion and people are understandably loyal to their team.
“The bottom line is that I had a good time at Newcastle and they are a big club who are desperate for success.
“Maybe I’ve taken the brunt of one of two of the fans’ frustrations because I’ve been fortunate enough to win one or two trophies and unfortunately Newcastle haven’t, but St James’ Park is a great place to play football and hopefully the club will have some success at some point.”
