Benitez has admitted that keeping Newcastle United in the Premier League could be more difficult than the Reds legendary comeback victory over Milan in the Champions League final.

Liverpool's stirring Istanbul revival in 2005 (after being 3-0 down at half-time) climaxed with a penalty shoot-out victory over the Italian club.

That is widely regarded as the most spectacular recovery in a major football final.

But Benitez acknowledges his current escape act is complicated by not being entirely in his own team's hands.

The Spaniard told the Newcastle Chronicle: “Maybe (it is has made it harder) because you cannot control other things it is more difficult.

“Everyone was expecting maybe Norwich not to get anything but they won against West Brom so we have just have to keep doing well or better, because if not it will be very difficult.

“But I have confidence. My message is very clear and was after the game, and now we still have eight games to play and we have to fight for each game, three points, and don’t see the other things.

“If we do well it will be easier, but if we cannot do well next week we have to carry on every day.”
