The manager insisted that was internal business, but it is understood a frank exchange resulted in an equally clear statement as to who is in charge.

And despite Shay Given making a defence for the boss today (Tuesday), it is alleged he was one of the three.

Allardyce: "If there is or there is not, you would have no idea of getting it from me. That's private and confidential.

"I cannot do a job other than by doing it the right way.

"The right way is to try and be successful over a period of time, as quickly as you can.

"You want it to be sustainable over a period of time, and not just a flash in the pan.

"At the moment, there are 52,000 who can pick a better team than me, so that's a distraction you cannot let happen.

"You have got to get on with your job. You know what works, and you know what doesn't work. You know what's right, and what's not right.

"Just because you get one or two bad results, it's doesn't change the way you work.

"At the end of the day, I have just got to look at the players and say, 'Play the sort of football you played against Blackburn Rovers'.

"It was more than battling, much, much more. You do not have 21 shots at goal and six on target and enter the final third of the opposition over 50 times by battling, so there was much more than battling there.

"Ultimately we were beaten by one man who produced two exceptional finishes on the day, David Bentley, and not really the Blackburn team.

"That for us was a bitter pill to swallow after a performance like that."
