Who Is Next For No 9 Shirt?

The No 9 jersey at Newcastle United has been a hot topic of discussion as talk of summer recruitment rumbles on.

One of United’s summer targets, Charlie Austin, was reportedly set to be offered the iconic shirt as part of a bid to lure him to Tyneside from Queens Park Rangers.

Its current occupant, Papiss Cisse, wants to get away from St James’ Park.

At 30, there is every chance of him being sold as Newcastle look to cash in on the player before his contract runs out in 2017.

Whether they can quite manage to land the mooted £10m asking price is up for debate given they paid just £9m for his services four years ago.

Alan Shearer told Oba Martins he would need broad shoulders when he wore the number back in 2006 after he had hung up his boots, and there had also been talk of retiring the No 9 shirt all together.
