What Is Harewood's Problem?

Let's be honest, Harewood has been a disappointment so far at St James’s Park and was shocking in his return to old club Nottingham Forest ... a game that was set up for him to show what he is worth.

On that showing, forget his multi-million pound price-tag ... I wouldn't give five quid and a box of firelighters for him!

He has only signed a three-month loan deal from Aston Villa, so we haven't lumbered ourselves with a knacker for long. But he MUST realise this is his chance to put right his wrongs.

What better stage than St James' Park?

Chris Hughton: “It’s a wonderful opportunity for him here and that’s generally the case with loan signings.

“Whether they’re a young player another club’s looking to get out for experience, or a player who is not playing in another club’s first team, it’s a good opportunity for them to show what they can do.

“He appreciates the chance he’s been given here, he’s excited, he’s settled in very well with the group. With the spirit we have here now the next part is to be playing regularly and scoring goals. He was okay with the decision to leave him out – disappointed, but he was fine.

“My decision to leave him out on Tuesday was very much tactical. We had a game on Saturday, we have another game coming up and I wanted to play Kevin Nolan in an advanced position.

“Although he came here with a feeling that he wants to get games, he knows it’s within team tactics. You can never guarantee a player a game and Marlon’s no different.

“When we took him we knew he’d missed a fair chunk of that pre-season period. We knew he’d had a fair amount of training under his belt since then, but not many games, so we knew there was a possibility he’d get stronger with each game and each day’s training.

“I don’t think we can allow ourselves to go past January and miss out on opportunities to make this squad as strong as we can for the second half of the season.

“Whether it will just be loan signings I don’t know. That’s something we’ll look at as we go along. At this moment we’re looking at loan signings but what I will find out is if there’s money to spend in that January window. That will be dictated by the circumstances over the next few weeks.”
