We Were Wrong To Doubt Roeder

The Irishman returned to Premiership action, and perhaps we were wrong to suggest Glenn Roeder was out of order letting him play for his country in midweek when he had yet to return to action for Newcastle.

There was the concern he could end up like Michael Owen, who has only played 30 minutes all year for his club, but turned out for England in the World Cup, and we all know what happened there.

But the performance for Ireland confirmed he is ready, and Roeder got it right.

Given: "We can take a lot of belief from this.

"Performances and results like this give a team a lot of that, they definitely do. Our next (league) game is against Portsmouth and, having got a point here, we can take a lot of confidence into the weekend. It's important that we build on this now and go on a decent run.

"Kieron showed what he brings to us. He just gives us something that is a little bit different - even in front of goal, which is something he hasn't always been renowned for.

"His finish was fantastic, his pace frightened the defenders, and it was great to see him out there again. I know myself from the last couple of months how frustrating it is not to play so I can only imagine what it must be like to be out for as long as he has been. But he's back now and hopefully his problems are behind him."
