We didn't play well - Sir Bobby

Sir Bobby

"I'm naturally disappointed. We've lost a vital match, the one that was the extra game to us, so we've got nothing from it.

"It was a massive victory for Middlesbrough and three valuable points which will help them to climb the league and be in a healthier position.

"It was a good derby. I didn't get out of hand, thanks to the players, and we lost narrowly.

"I would say Middlesbrough have probably defended better than in any match this season because they did defend the box very well, won some vital headers, threw bodies in in the box and made a lot of challenges.

"We haven't scored a goal for the first time in many, many a match, and if you don't score, you won't win a match."

"It's not all doom and gloom because we've lost. We've got to give a bit of credit to Middlesbrough, who gave a fighting performance.

"We didn't play that well, it wasn't one of our better games, but that's the nature of the game.

"We've had a long, long run, we've lost a match, but it isn't the end of the world. We'll bounce back.

"We've got Inter Milan now to think about. It's another test for us at another level. We'll go and enjoy it, hope to do the best we can and we'll get back to league football when we come back.

"We're still third. I know that had we won, we would have been something like 10 points away from Chelsea, but we've lost now, there it is.

"It's more difficult to win the league, but we've never talked about winning the league. We just said we would try to threaten it and challenge it, and we still will. We're still in position to do it."

"We've set many standards and not really maintained them consistently enough. We've shown what we're capable of doing - we need to produce that on a consistent basis now.

"We can do it, we can play against the best. We've beaten Manchester United here, we've beaten Newcastle, we've beaten Liverpool, we've drawn with Chelsea.

"We've had big teams here and we've got Arsenal to come. It will be a great test for us. It's up to them. They can produce it, they've got to do it against everybody.

"I thought it was a tremendous win, the players got stronger and stronger as the game went on. The second-half performance was magnificent.

"I thought we deserved the win. It wasn't just the result, but a great performance."
